When playing on a mobile phone using Chrome, it's impossible to see the chat and the board at the same time. I'm okay with this, as there's usually not a lot of chatting going on.
Two features would make this chat box much better:
1. Timestamp and move# on all messages. If somebody says "good move" and you miss their message, it's impossible to know what they were referring to. Ideally this could be something you could toggle on and off, as some people don't care at all and that would just be extra.
2. When playing on a mobile browser like Chrome, it's impossible to see the chat box. Now, most people are not chatting a lot, but sometimes it happens. If there was a little notification bubble or something next to the board that there's a new message, that would solve the problem. Or, just have the message scroll or appear above the board for a moment.
