It was a 12-game match between defending champion Ju Wenjun and her Chinese compatriot Lei Tingjie !
The match ran from July 5-23, with the first 6 games in Ju Wenjun’s home city of Shanghai and the rest of the match in Lei Tingjie’s Chongqing12 !

with white pieces to claim her fourth title with a 6.5-5.5 victory over GM Lei Tingjie.

This is the first time in the history of chess that both the world champions are from China! Earlier Ding Liren won the World chess championship against Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi and now Ju Wenjun won the Women world chess championship 2023!

The 17th women’s world champion Ju Wenjun, who has held the title since 2018, also picked up the €300,000 ($334,000) winner’s prize, while Lei Tingjei took €200,000.
