How strong you need to be to make money with chess?

At least you had a very good time. It's a very satisfying experience crushing people in a chess tournament!
You can also make money moychendising. I luv to browse the chess shoppes at tourneys and I wish there were physical stores I could visit to buy chess goods and gifts.
#41 crushing? Well, there are always losers when there are winners. If you watched Maurice Ashley's speech on TED: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jd8lGs7997k
He compares chess to life. What's flawed is that in chess, there will always be a lose when there is a winner. Not so true in life. Anyways, I'm getting way too off topic.

Great, I hope you all don't mind the lack of effort and time I spend on the forums. Kappa
I think the question raised is too vague.... how _much_ money are you thinking about?!
Just make a few bucks, or do you want to make a decent living for you and your family in a bigger city in Europe or US?

For some additional income, 1400 and teaching kids is fine (and a valuable thing, too!)
But for the latter, even 2600 might not be enough?! Esp. as there is no guarantee; some GMs surely live well from books etc, but many others do not...
@gurkenzug, by playing in tournaments you gain fame in addition to the winnings. Fame helps you find sponsors and customers for your books, chess lessons, and other things you want to sell. You can also make money by signing on chess boards.
Tangelo, sure, these opportunities exist - but will they feed you and 2 kids? Reliable over years? I doubt it....
It will surely work for the 2700+ elite, but who remembers a 2500 winning last years "never heard of event" in....where was it actually...
No, after all the responses and searching about this you need to be 2750+, super GM strength in standard, rapid and blitz to have a mininum wage job, so i forget completely about trying this.
